The matatabi tree is related to the kiwi tree and grows in Asia, particularly in China and Japan. The dried twigs of this tree have a very special effect on cats. They contain a substance that cats find palatable and helps them relax. Matatabi contains actinicin and matatabi lactone. These are alkaloids that influence nerve impulses in the brains of Felidae. It is often observed that naturally relaxed cats are less interested in the sticks than cats that are tense.
Dosage and application
You can give Matatabi (complementary pet food) as a toy. Cats play with the stick; some chew on it or bite it to pieces. Many cats roll and rub in places where the stick or remnants of it were. After playing, the cat is calmer, its pupil constricts, and it often grooms and sleeps. If the bark is removed from the stick, the effect is even greater.
