"BECO food bowls do not contain melamine or formaldehyde."

UPDATE 21 February 2021.

As of 21 February 2021, we have still not received an official statement from the manufacturer BecoPet, but we have received a detailed communication from our supplier, as follows:

1. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) advises against using melamine plastic tableware with bamboo and/or maize fibres. If used, there is a chance that too much formaldehyde will end up in the food or drink.

Supplier's reply:

No melamine is used in the Ditsrict70 bowls. Therefore the toxic substance formaldehyde is NOT released. In addition, our supplier has had several independent tests carried out in which the bowl itself is heated to over 100 degrees and NO formaldehyde is released.

2. The NVWA informs importers and suppliers of these products that they must immediately withdraw the products from the market. The authority will take enforcement action if the products are offered in the Netherlands. In addition, the Voedingscentrum advises not to use tableware made of 100% melamine for hot food and drinks for children between the ages of 0 and 3.

Supplier's reply:

District70 is not included and they are also not made of 100% plastic melamine.

3. On the basis of signals from the EU, the NVWA carried out its own exploratory investigation into melamine plastic crockery with bamboo fibres. This concerned hard, wear-resistant plastic crockery that can be reused. Cups, bowls and mugs were sampled and examined. These showed that a number of articles exceeded the migration limit for formaldehyde.

Supplier's reply:

District70 bowls do not release any formaldehyde at all and therefore always remain below this standard.

4. BuRO also points out that bamboo and maize fibres as an additive to plastic tableware has not been assessed by the EU food safety authority

Supplier's reply:

At District 70, bamboo is not used as an additive to a melamine plastic product. The trays are made of bamboo and do not contain melamine.

5. The NVWA advises against using melamine plastic tableware with bamboo and/or maize fibre in it, because in many cases the bamboo material is mixed with melamine. The moment this mixed material comes into contact with hot liquids > 100 degrees, there is a risk of toxic substances such as formaldehyde being released.

Supplier's reply:

Our District 70 BAMBOO feeding troughs do not contain any melamine and have recently been tested for formaldehyde. The feeding troughs comply with the current guidelines of European legislation and are safe when used for animals.
